Catherine Ruby (Ware) Waltrip Delmia was born in San Bernardino, Calif., the third of five children of Frank and Harriet Elmia Thompson Ware. Her parents worked seasonally, traveling up and down the state in search of employment, and Delmia lived in poverty during her childhood, and was subjected to periodic emotional abuse by her father.
